The Complete PEI Lawn Care Schedule (Month-by-Month)

    Quick Answer
For a healthy PEI lawn: aerate and overseed in early May, fertilize 3–4 times May–October, mow weekly at 3–3.5 inches from May to mid-October, and do a fall cleanup with a final low cut in late October–early November. Avoid summer fertilizer in heatwaves; water deeply 1× per week instead of daily.

A great lawn in Prince Edward Island isn't about working harder — it's about working at the right time. PEI's climate (cool springs, warm humid summers, long mild falls) is actually ideal for cool-season grasses like Kentucky bluegrass and fine fescue. The trick is knowing what to do each month.

Here's the calendar we follow on every full-season lawn care contract across Charlottetown, Stratford, Cornwall, and Summerside.

    April — Wake-Up

Once the ground firms up (usually mid-to-late April), do a light spring cleanup: rake out matted leaves and dead grass, but don't power-rake hard — you'll damage the crown of new shoots. First mow is high (3.5–4 inches) as soon as the grass is actively growing. Avoid walking on wet, soft ground.

    May — Pre-Emergent + First Fertilizer

Apply a crabgrass pre-emergent before soil temps hit 55°F (typically the first or second week of May in PEI). Pair it with a slow-release spring fertilizer (something like a 24-0-10). Mow weekly at 3.5 inches.

    June — Peak Growth

Your lawn is at full speed. Mow weekly, sometimes twice a week if you can. Sharpen mower blades — torn grass tips turn brown and invite disease. This is the best month to spot-spray broadleaf weeds (dandelion, plantain, clover) while they're actively growing.

    July — Defense Mode

Heat and humidity stress lawns. Two changes:

    • Raise mowing height to 4 inches. Longer blades shade the soil, hold moisture, and choke out crabgrass.
    • Water deep and infrequent. 1 inch per week, in 1–2 sessions. Light daily sprinkles produce shallow roots and weak summer lawns.

    August — Recovery Prep

Keep mowing high. Watch for grub damage (irregular brown patches that lift like a carpet). Late August is when you start scheduling your fall aeration and overseeding — book early because every lawn care company in PEI is fully booked through September.

September — The Most Important Month

If you do nothing else all year, do this: core aerate and overseed in early-to-mid September. Cool nights, warm soil, and reliable rain make this the single best window in PEI for thickening a lawn. Use a quality blend of Kentucky bluegrass and fine fescue suited to Maritime conditions. Apply a starter fertilizer (high phosphorus) at the same time.

October — Winterizer + Final Cut

Apply a winterizer fertilizer (high potassium, e.g. a 12-0-24) in early October to harden the lawn for winter. Drop your final mowing height to about 2.5 inches by Halloween — short enough to prevent snow mould, tall enough to protect the crown. Bag the final cut along with leaves.

    November to March — Hibernation

Stay off frozen or snow-covered grass. Avoid piling salt-laden snow on lawn edges (a common problem along driveways in Stratford and Charlottetown). Plan next year's projects.

The 5 Mistakes That Kill PEI Lawns

    1. Mowing too short. Anything under 3 inches in summer fries the roots and invites weeds.
    2. Watering too often. Daily light watering = shallow roots = a lawn that dies in the first dry week of August.
    3. Skipping fall. Spring fertilizer feels productive but September aeration + overseeding does 5x more for a thick lawn.
    4. Wrong seed. "Sun and shade" big-box mixes are mostly annual ryegrass. Use a Maritime-suited Kentucky bluegrass / fine fescue blend.
    5. Bagging clippings every cut. Mulched clippings return nitrogen to the soil. Only bag the final fall cut and any cuts where you've removed more than 1/3 of the blade.
